Zion is a dream come to life for many of the nearly 20,000 people who call the city their home. For them, it is a special place, this special city on the shores of Lake Michigan.
A strong faith conceived and developed Zion and people of faith have long received a warm welcome in the community. Thirty-five individual churches spread their influence from throughout the neighborhoods of Zion. There are homes here to fit every budget and lifestyle. They line quiet, tree shaded streets and broad boulevards. They look out onto parks golf courses, small lakes, and forests of trees. And they range from turn-of-the century mansions and large executive styles in new subdivisions to handsome condominium complexes and rental apartments.
Award-winning public school systems provide superb education programs and facilities for Zion’s youngsters and are augmented by exceptional parochial systems. Going on to higher education is often an easy commute. Opportunities for recreation and all around family fun abound in the huge state park that borders the community, in 654 acres of well-equipped community parks, in area forest preserves, and in an enormous theme park nearby.
A high quality in-town hospital assures quick access to skilled medical care when needed. Two other area hospitals reinforce family security. Shopping opportunities are plentiful, stretching the length of Zion’s Sheridan Road, and found in such places as two area factory outlet malls.
Zion is situated on the shore of Lake Michigan about equidistant between two major metropolitan centers, Chicago to the south and Milwaukee to the north. Interstate 94, Zion’s link to the Interstate Highway System is only five miles west of the city via State Route 173. U.S. Highway 41, carrying traffic between Wisconsin and Chicago, is about four miles west of Zion. State Route 131 skirts the western edge of the community and Sheridan Road, a major north-south artery, cuts through the heart of the city, connecting Zion with Waukegan to the south and Wisconsin to the north. Lewis Avenue is another major north-south route between Zion and Waukegan.
Zion air travelers have a choice of departure sites, Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport 40 miles to the south or Milwaukee’s Mitchell International Airport 40 miles to the north. Limousine service to either airport is offered by area firms. Corporate and private aircraft are based at Waukegan Regional Airport, situated off the southwest corner of the community, about 10 minutes from downtown Zion. Commuters to Chicago can board Metra commuter trains in downtown Zion for a speedy trip to the Loop in air conditioned comfort. Pace buses carry passengers between various points in Zion and to neighboring communities.
The dozens of interstate and intrastate trucking firms that serve the Chicago metropolitan area serve the needs of local business and industry, as do the several package delivery services. Commercial shipping docks are about six miles away for shipments via the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway.
