Oak Lawn

Oak Lawn is a community with a distinctive “home town” atmosphere, a place where people really get to know their neighbors. However, a visitor could easily forget that this beautiful, peaceful suburban village is only minutes away from Chicago, third largest city in the nation. Village fathers past and present, have exhibited an unusually mature responsibility for developing a fine quality of life.

Oak Lawn has gone through numerous periods of growth that were strongly influenced by its proximity to a large city, the convenience of a fine highway network and the excellent commuting facilities of a mass transit system. A responsible mayor-village manager form of government plans for the future economic, cultural and human needs of the over 57,000 residents. It continues to develop services that have been recognized as leadership programs by the state and nation. A well-designed water system provides adequate water for Oak Lawn residents and several neighboring communities. A water improvement program keeps pace with increasing demands. The Youth Commission looks to the development and growth of young people as future responsible citizens. A family counseling service, which is funded by the Village, offers professional services for families and individuals. Well-trained fire and police departments continually upgrade and generate innovative programs for the benefit of the community.

Oak Lawn loves its parades and celebrations. Large crowds turn out for the annual Chamber of Commerce Christmas parade, the high school’s homecoming parade, the SHOP OAK LAWN promotions, and the annual Oak Lawn Family Days summer festival. The well-kept residential streets demonstrate the pride people take in their neighborhoods. Superb health care and fine public and private schools are located in Oak Lawn as are churches of all denominations. Cultural and recreational pursuits are available, everything from browsing in the full-service public library to ice-skating at the park district ice arena. Shopping is very convenient; a variety of goods and the friendly, personal attention of local retailers attract shoppers from throughout the Chicagoland area.

Even though Oak Lawn’s physical expansion may have slowed down, the Village is entering an exciting period of redevelopment as it looks to growth from within the community. Thoughtful planning is ongoing, keeping Oak Lawn at the top of the list of fine communities in the Chicago suburbs.
