 West Chicago is governed by mayor-aldermanic form with a city administrator who manages city business and is responsible for day-to-day operations. City officials work out of the the modern building at 475 Main St. - right in the center of the downtown business district so as to be easily accessible to residents, business owners and visitors.
The city manages its curbside recycling program; residential brush pick-up May through October; street snow plowing and sweeping; and maintenance of city streets to ensure safe driving conditions.
The West Chicago Police Department employs 40 sworn officers and eight part-time personnel. The Police Department sponsors the Neighborhood Watch program, and promotes crime awareness and prevention through talks to school classes, and civic groups and service organizations. Other school programs include D.A.R.E., Stranger Danger, and McGruff; bicycle registration; and child fingerprinting. In cooperation with the West Chicago Park District, the department supervises and participates in Safety Town for children. The West Chicago Fire protection District is an independent organization that provides fire protection and responds to emergency calls in the city and surrounding unincorporated areas with 27 full-time firefighters (20 of whom are trained to operate the district's three advanced life-support emergency vehicles) plus 15 paid-on-call volunteers. The district operates out of three fire stations strategically located throughout the city.
Winfield Township, headquartered in downtown West Chicago, provides general assistance to the needy; offers five-day-a-week bus service throughout the township for senior citizens; and maintains roads and provides looseleaf pick-up for unincorporated areas. Wayne Township also serves a portion of unincorporated West Chicago. The West Chicago Chamber of Commerce & Industry, which boasts more than 225 members, unites the business community, channels its resources, and acts as a business advocate. Its more than 20 programs serve both residents and businesses in promoting and enhancing West Chicago's economic growth and progress.
