Lemont is among the oldest of Chicago Southland communities, settled in 1836 and incorporated in 1873. The community is located in the DesPlaines River Valley providing hilly terrain and a picturesque setting.
The Village was founded during construction of the Illinois & Michigan Canal which linked the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River. The canal and Lemont’s historic downtown are a focal point of the community with quaint shops and restaurants attracting many visitors annually. New subdivisions continue to expand the variety of housing available within the community. Thousands of acres of adjacent forest preserves, excellent neighborhood parks and schools provide Lemont with a high quality of life. Many challenging golf courses are located in and around Lemont including Cog Hill, Ruffled Feathers, Gleneagle and Mid-Iron. Cog Hill is the home of the famed Western Open Tournament.
Construction of the I-355 extension has provided Lemont with a tremendous opportunity for business and commercial development. Easy transportation to I-55 and daily METRA commuter service to downtown Chicago keep Lemont residents ‘connected’ while enjoying the relaxed nature of their location.
