Hoffman Estates History

Schaumburg Township including Hoffman Estates remained a rural farming community until the 1950’s. In 1950 the population was 1,080 and Elgin was the major economic center. Sam and Jack Hoffman, of Father and Son Construction, purchased a 160 acre piece of land east of Roselle Road between Golf and Higgins Roads in 1954. After an additional 600 acres were purchased, they had the first 40 acres rezoned into 10,000 square foot home sites. In late 1955, the first homeowners began to move into the new subdivision. The homes sold for $14,500. The construction company also donated two park sites and four church sites and they also began to build the first school. Residents voted to incorporate as the Village Hoffman Estates on September 19, 1959. The incorporated area was just under three square miles and the population was 8,000.

The first land that was annexed to the Village of Hoffman Estates was just north of the tollway. This happened in the beginning of 1961. By 1962, 2,000 more acres were annexed. These annexations more than doubled the size of the incorporated land area. In the end, the village accumulated 4,080 acres of forest preserve. That was one-third of its total area.

In 1963, Hoffman Estates formed the Industrial Inducement Committee, while Schaumburg made plans for residential and commercial development. Then in 1965, the Thomas Engineering Company moved in. Other plans didn’t work out when land that Hoffman Estates was planning to use for industry was taken over by Poplar Creek Forest Preserve. They did have a five year plan for commercial development on Roselle Road, between Golf and Higgins Road. The Hoffman Plaza Shopping Center never did measure up to Schaumburg’s Woodfield Mall.

In 1978, the Village incorporated vacant land in Barrington Township. They planned to use it for industrial development. Sears, Roebuck & Co. relocated its 5,000 employee Merchandise Group to the 7,180 acre Prairie Stone Business Park in 1992. It was one of the largest corporate centers in the northwest suburbs. This business park is also the site of Northern Illinois University’s branch campus. Population more than doubled between 1970-1990. It went from 22,238 to 46,561 and then it grew to 49,495 in the year 2000.”
