Named for the herds of elk that called the local woodlands home, Elk Grove continued to grow to include commercial enterprises such as general stores, smithies, creameries, and churning houses. In 1868, the first school, Biesterfield School, was built; the building still stands today and is used as a private residence. In the early 1900’s, additional schools and churches rose from the rural landscape to service the area’s increasing population. In 1914, a forest preserve district was established to protect public lands for use by residents and for the generations to come. In the early 1940’s, the rural community became an industrial center with the building of a Douglas Aircraft manufacturing plant. When the war ended, the city of Chicago purchased the land and buildings for a $1 and later utilized the site for what has become the world’s busiest airport, O’Hare International. As the airport expanded in the 1950’s and 1960’s, so did its neighbor Elk Grove Village. In the 1950’s, Dallas-based developer Centex Corporation purchased 1500 acres and began building residential neighborhoods and industrial parks. In 1956, Elk Grove Village incorporated with 116 citizens and put into place a plan for controlled growth. During the past 40 years, the 1500 acres has almost quadrupled to 6,000 acres, accommodating more than 3,500 businesses and over 33,500 residents.
