Des Plaines is a comfortable community. Its well-kept homes range from modest brick bungalows to large and elaborate executive style homes, and from cozy rental apartments to luxury townhomes and condominiums. The city boasts an extensive parks system with recreation facilities that are easily envied. Dozens of clubs and organizations, park district programs, a local drama group, and community concert band keep residents busy and entertained. Shopping is convenient, with centers scattered throughout the community for quick access from residential areas. Four highly rated public school districts serve most areas of the city and a community college is within city boundaries. Des Plaines is home to a large contingent of prominent business and light industrial firms, as well as small to medium size companies.

Des Plaines enjoys maximum travel convenience. Only five minutes from O’Hare International Airport and with direct connections to Chicago area expressways, it’s possible to get there quick, wherever there is. Multiple interchanges on I-90 and I-294, link Des Plaines to all of metropolitan Chicago and the resort areas of Southern Wisconsin, and to the entire Interstate System. In addition, U.S. highways 14,12 and 45 and State routes 58, 62, 72, and 83 crisscross the city, tying it to neighboring communities. To the south, O’Hare International, the world’s busiest airport, residents and business people have access to 23 domestic and 23 international airlines, with flights to all major cities in the U.S. and the world. To the north, private and corporate aircraft are based at nearby Palwaukee Airport, a facility with three runways, one that is 5,000 feet in length.

Des Plaines commerce and industry is served by Chicago and Northwestern, Wisconsin Central, and Milwaukee Road railways. Commuters to Chicago board fast, comfortable Metra commuter trains at one of two stations, one in the downtown area of the city, and another on the city’s northwest side. PACE buses provide mass transportation to points within the city and to neighboring communities. Both Metra and PACE are services of the Regional Transportation Authority. Taxicab service and several limousine services are available. Easy access to everywhere is one of the many advantages offered by Des Plaines.

Important Information For Des Plaines:

Vehicle Stickers

New residents must purchase vehicle stickers within 30 days of moving into Des Plaines. The City’s annual vehicle sticker sales begin in May of each year and must be displayed before July 1 of that same year. A standard passenger vehicle sticker is $30.00. A motorcycle tag is $20.

Pet Licenses

Cat and dog pet licenses are sold at the same time and have the same validity dates as vehicle stickers. Owner must include the animal’s current rabies tag number.
